Megan Othling - Albuquerque Doula

 Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula

Ayurveda is an ancient system of natural healthcare that focuses on bringing balance to mind, body, and spirit. Ayurvedic postpartum care is focused on nurturing new parents in the specific ways they need as they recover from the incredible transformation of pregnancy and birth.

As an Ayurvedic postpartum doula, my support is based on the Four Pillars of Care for the postpartum period. These pillars are Healing Foods and Herbs, Meditation and Breath-work, Daily Self-Nurturing, and most importantly, Rest. I support parents using these Four Pillars through:

  • Providing nourishing foods specific to the needs of each of the six weeks of the initial postpartum period. These foods are iron building, promote healthy digestion, and promote healing of tissues and the rebuilding of energy throughout the body.

  • Providing healing herbs and oils for the healing and soothing of common postpartum issues such as sore breasts and nipples, and hemorrhoids.

  • Supporting the early days of breastfeeding through help with latching, positions, and common issues, and through referral to more expert resources when necessary.

  • Teaching helpful breathing exercises that help calm the nervous system as well as aide in regulating hormone levels, and providing time and space to put these exercises into practice.

  • Teaching Ayurvedic self-massage, which is a simple way to care for yourself each day (or as often as possible) in a way that helps regulate your nervous system, soothe body aches, and can help prevent or treat clogged milk ducts. I also provide space and time for this practice through caring for the baby or tending to household needs while the new parent does this nurturing practice.

  • Teaching baby massage, which helps regulate baby’s developing nervous system, creates a special bonding time, and can help with some digestive issues and fussiness with baby.

  • Caring for household needs, other children, pets, etc. so the new parents can rest and heal as much as possible.

Ayurveda says that the first forty-two days after birth impact the next forty-two years of a birthing person’s life. This is because pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are such shifts in the lives of people and families. Providing yourself with as much of a foundation of rest, healing, and regulation as possible during this time can be so helpful in starting your parenting journey in a healthy way. This is why my postpartum care extends through the first six weeks after birth.
